Dec 15 : Delhi Police pick up Afzal Guru, S A R Geelani of Zakir Hussain College, and two others Shaukat Hussain Guru and his wife Afshan Guru.

Dec 20: Amid calls from US and the UN to exercise restraint, India mobilizes its armed forces near the Line of control and international border with Pakistan under Operation Parakram. This was the largest military mobilization since the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Both countries move ballistic missiles close to the border.

Dec 21:  India recalls its high commissioner from Pakistan.

Dec 24: Indian army destroys 21 Pakistani bunkers near LoC. Pakistan cancels leave for troops.  Dec 25: Under international pressure, Pak government arrests JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar.

Jan 2002: India deployed 550,000 troops while Pakistan deployed 300,000 troops near border.

May 14: Three terrorists attack a security forces camp near Jammu killing 34 people, including women and children of troops.

May 18: india expels Pakistan's ambassador.

May 22, 2002: The then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee tells Indian troops to remain for an  "aar ya paar" (decisive battle)  with Pakistan.

June 4, 2002: Charges framed against four - Afzal Guru, SAR Geelani, Shaukat Hussain Guru and Afshan Guru.

Mid-June 2002: India eases tension, removes air restrictions for Pak aircrafts over Indian air space, Indian warships withdraw from  Pak coasts.

Dec 18, 2002: Court gives death sentence to SAR Geelani, Shaukat Hussain Guru and Afzal Guru, while Afshan Guru was acquitted.
