Jharkhand Guv seeks report on investigations into Ranchi violence, ropeway mishap

Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais sought a report from the state government on the ropeway mishap in Deoghar and the violence in Ranchi, expressing displeasure over the delay in the investigations by the two committees formed to probe these cases. In a statement, the Raj Bhavan said that the governor expressed surprise that no inquiry report has been submitted to the state government by the committees despite a timeline of two months. Three persons were killed in the ropeway accident in Deoghar on April 10 and it took the Air Force, Army and NDRF 46 hours to rescue all the 60 passengers stranded in cable cars at Trikut Hills. In June, two people were killed and two dozen critically injured as violent protests rocked Ranchi over now-suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma's controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. Bais has written to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, drawing his attention to the two incidents, the statement issued on Wednesday night said. "He has mentioned that on April 10 there was a rope-way accident at Trikut hill in Deoghar district. A committee was constituted by the State Government on April 19 to investigate the said accident. The committee was to submit the inquiry report in two months," it said.

United States: Congressman Krishnamoorthi criticises China for aggression against India

Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Wednesday slammed China for its latest aggression against India and highlighted the need for the United States to continue to work with India. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had in a statement to Parliament recently said Chinese troops tried to "unilaterally" change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Yangtse area of Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector on December 9, but the Indian Army compelled them to retreat with its "firm and resolute" response. “I’m disturbed to learn of the latest show of aggression by the Chinese Communist Party through its violation of Indian territory with its armed forces,” Krishnamoorthi said in a statement. “While I’m grateful that this clash led to no serious casualties to Indian forces, it serves as another reminder of the growing belligerence of the Chinese Communist Party and the need for the United States to continue to work with India and all our security partners in the region to counter Beijing’s aggression,” he added.

Diplomats: UN blocks Myanmar military from taking UN seat

A key U.N. committee has again blocked Myanmar's military junta from taking the country's seat at the United Nations, two well-informed U.N. diplomats said Wednesday. The General Assembly's credentials committee met Monday and deferred action on the junta's request, the diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity before a formal announcement likely later this week. The decision means that Kyaw Moe Tun, who was Myanmar's ambassador at the United Nations when the military ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 1, 2021, will remain on the job. Last December, Myanmar's military rulers also failed in their effort to replace Tun, who remains a supporter of the previous government and the opposition National Unity Government, which opposes the junta. Chris Gunness, director of the London-based Myanmar Accountability Project, welcomed the credentials committee's move, saying it has “great diplomatic and symbolic significance, at a time when the illegal coup leaders are attempting to gain international recognition.”

UN council ousts Iran from UN commission backing women

The U.N. Economic and Social Council voted Wednesday to immediately oust Iran from the U.N.'s premiere global body fighting for gender equality because of its systematic violation of the rights of women and girls, a decision the United States hailed as “historic” and Iran claimed was based on “fabricated allegations.” The U.S-sponsored resolution was sparked by Iran's ongoing brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters who took to the streets in September after the death of a 22-year-old woman taken into custody by the morality police. At least 488 people have been killed since the demonstrations began, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that's been monitoring the protests, while another 18,200 people have been detained by authorities.
