The Karnataka Exam Authority is all set to conduct recruitment exams for various posts on October 28 and 29. For the smooth conduct of exams, the board has recently released an order regarding the dress code of Muslim students.

According to the recent announcement, female Muslim students are allowed to wear Hijab during the exam, even though there is an ongoing dispute on this issue in the state.

The decision has been taken after lengthy discussions on their acceptance in schools in a recent progress review meeting with CM Siddaramaiah, and State Education Minister MC Sudhakar. However, Hijab wearers are required to arrive an hour early for additional screening. The board has issued specific guidelines for the hijab-wearers.

According to the guidelines, the hijab wearers are not allowed with certain items during the exam which include embroidered clothing, flowers, brooches, long sleeves, and jeans.

After attending a meeting with the CM concerning State Education Policy and the issue of filling vacancies, The Minister of Higher Education Dr. MC Sudhakar, said, 'The hijab issue was not part of the discussion. Some people want to raise objections on small things but we cannot infringe on the rights of the people. Even in NEET, candidates are allowed to wear hijab', he stated.

In 2022, the BJP government in Karnataka banned students from wearing hijabs to government schools. This decision was made in response to an incident in December 2021 in which six hijab-wearing girls were barred from entering the Government PU College in Udupi.  After that, this issue was raised in various regions throughout the state.

The Karnataka High Court upheld the prohibition in March 2022, stating that the hijab was not a necessary component of religious practice. The Supreme Court heard arguments against the order and issued a divided decision on October 22.

This drive will be conducted for 670 vacancies in five government-run corporations, including Keonics and Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation.
