Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results LIVE: BJP registers historic victory in Sangli, wins 41 out of 78 seats

The polls for Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation were conducted on July 31.

Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Result LIVE:

Counting of votes for Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC) and Jalgaon Municipal Corporation (JMC) in Maharashtra is underway. The polls for Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation were conducted on July 31. 

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Shiv Sena and NCP are the main contendors in the elections to Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad municipal corporation. It is noteworthy that Shiv Sena and BJP joined hands in Jalgaon, however the saffron party decided to go alone in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad.

According to latest updates, BJP has registered a historic victory in Sangli by winning 41 out of the 78 seats. On the other hand, Congress which has been in power for the last 20 years, failed to secure majority despite forming an alliance with the NCP. What is more interesting that the Maratha reservation which have boiled Maharashtra over the past few days, have not impacted the BJP votes.

01:10 pm:  In Sangli, Congress is leading on 23 seat while the BJP is leading on 13 seats. Other parties are ahead on 2 seats,as per latest report.

12:57 pm: Jalgaon Municipal Corporation election results:

Total seats 57 | BJP ahead on 57 | Shiv Sena on 14 and Others on 4 seats

12:40 pm: Sangli Municipal Corporation election results - 

Total seat - 78 | BJP wins 8 seats | Congress bags 7 | 6 seats bagged by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) | Others 1 seat 

In Jalgaon, around 55 per cent voters had exercised their franchise. Last time the city had registered 63 per cent voting.

Around 62 per cent polling was registered in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation, one percentage point less than the 2013 polls.

A total of 754 candidates are vying for 153 seats in these two cities, which have a cumulative voter population of 7,89,251.
