125 child labourers rescued, police arrest 32 employers

Mumbai: About 125 child labourers were rescued and 32 owners of hotel and leather manufacturing units arrested for employing underage workers at Agripada area in South Mumbai, police said here yesterday.


Acting on a tip-off from NGO Pratham, which alerted the police about the presence of underage workers in hotels and leather manufacturing units in the Agripada area, the police said.

"Accordingly, raids were conducted yesterday, during which 125 child labourers, aged between 5 and 14 years, were rescued and 32 owners of these establishments were nabbed," Deputy Police Commissioner (Enforcement) Mahesh Patil said, adding a case was registered under relevant sections of the Child
Labour Act at Agripada police station.
