Kashmir recorded widespread light to moderate rain and snow, with the highest snowfall in Gulmarg (43.4 mm) and Batote (44 mm) during the early hours on Wednesday.
Khardung La pass is one of the strategically important routes through which roads to both China and Pakistan borders pass through.
Traffic dept officials said, "Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is closed for vehicular movement due to landslides/mudslides and shooting stones at several places.

The roads have been covered with a thick layer of snow and clearing operations are in process, using heavy machinery such as JCB.

"We have already issued an advisory about moderate to heavy snowfall in Kashmir division and rain in the Jammu division. Inclement weather is expected to continue till January 9 (forenoon)", an official of the MeT department said.
Himalayan region of Munsiyari town in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand received fresh snowfall on December 29.
Reports say cities including Sunridge, Edmonton Ski Club, Snow Valley and Rabbit Hill announced closures to the extreme cold.

On October 23 2021, Srinagar recorded the coldest October in 39 years, with similar conditions in other parts of Kashmir.
The announcement comes after at least three trekkers, out of a group of 13, died following heavy rains and snowfall in Himachal Pradesh.
