Shujaat Bukhari was apparently silenced by those who love violence and were unhappy with his efforts for peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Joint Resistance Leadership, a union of separatist groups, said in a statement today that there had been a sudden spike in civilian killings since the eve of Eid. It also demanded an international probe into Shujaat Bukhari's killing.
Situation in the Valley remains tense following brazen killings of Rising Kashmir newspaper's editor-in-chief Shujaat Bukhari and Army rifleman Aurangzeb in separate incidents earlier this week.
The photograph, a screen grab from a video, shows a bearded man surveying the inside of the journalist's vehicle. The video was purportedly recorded by a passerby following the attack on Bukhari outside his office.
Srinagar Command JOC Lieutenant General Anil Bhatt told IndiaTV that there was no doubt that the broad daylight attack on Rising Kashmir newspaper editor-in-chief was the handiwork of Pakistan's ISI.
The terrorists managed to flee after the attack. The area has been cordoned off and a massive manhunt has been launched to locate the militants.
According to reports, Bukhari was advised by the Hurriyat not to attend a conference in Dubai. However, he went ahead with his plans which infuriated the Hurriyat.
"Shujaat Silenced," the headline of the top story on Rising Kashmir's website said. "Fearless journalist pays price for upholding the truth," the sub-head added.
