Sharad Pawar pointed out that the failure of the Eknath Shinde government will lead to several rebel MLAs returning to their original party.
Maharashtra Floor Test: The BJP-Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde camp) government held office on Thursday after Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis took as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a day after Uddhav Thackeray resigned as CM.
NCP spokesman Mahesh Tapase said BJP had termed the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi govt as a "three-wheel auto-rickshaw" pulling in different directions when the new dispensation headed by Shiv Sena rebel Shinde itself resembled a two-wheeler.
Maharashtra Political Crisis: While rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the new chief minister of Maharashtra following the collapse of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government, Devendra Fadnavis, a former CM who had said he would remain outside, took oath as Shinde's deputy.
Devendra Fadnavis's announcement defied expectations that he would return as chief minister with the support of the Shinde faction.
I had come (to power) in an unexpected manner and I am going out in a similar fashion, Uddhav Thackeray said as he announced his resignation as Maharashtra Chief Minister during Facebook LIVE address today.
In this Sena vs Sena battle, Eknath Shinde's camp had earlier asked Uddhav to leave this unnatural Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance and patch up with the BJP, however, no such move was made by the chief minister.
The faction - currently in a Guwahati hotel - erupted into joy and celebrations after the apex court ruling and also expressed gratitude to the Centre for providing security to the rebel MLAs and their families.
Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has upped the ante and said those who want to leave can do so and also tore into the BJP, saying it wants to 'finish off Shiv Sena'.
Sources said Murmu called them up personally and spoke to them before filing her nomination for the July 18 presidential election.
Maharashtra political crisis: Several Shiv Sena MLAs led by Eknath Shinde have revolted against the party, plunging the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra into a crisis.
Addressing a presser, when asked if the opposition BJP had a role to play in the ongoing political crisis in the state, Ajit Pawar said, "So far, no top BJP leader has been seen in the forefront."
MVA decided to back CM Uddhav Thackeray. I believe once the (Shiv Sena) MLAs return to Mumbai the situation will change, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said.
Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde said that it is essential to get out of the unnatural front for the survival of the party and Shiv Sainiks.
As Sena struggled to quell the unrest, party MP Sanjay Raut claimed that contact has been established with Shinde, who he described as a “loyal Shiv Sainik of Balasaheb Thackeray”.
The NCP chief said he would be meeting Uddhav Thackeray later in the day and would be leaving for Mumbai soon after the opposition meeting on the joint presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, the BJP will hold its parliamentary board meeting on Tuesday where it is likely to finalise its pick for the election slated to be held on July 18, sources said.
The process to elect India's next President began on June 15. The last date for filing nominations is June 29. The polls, if necessary, will be held on July 18 and the counting on July 21.
The Congress has been reaching out to other opposition parties for a common candidate for the presidential polls.
"If you see the votes polled by every candidate of NCP, Shiv Sena and Congress, they received the votes as per the quota. Only Praful Patel received one extra vote and I know from where it came. That was not MVA's vote, it was from the opposite side," Pawar told media.
