482 motorists fined, 269 vehicles impounded in special drive

New Delhi: Cracking down on stunt bikers and traffic violators in the high-security New Delhi area, police today impounded 269 vehicles, detained 250 bikers and fined 482 motorists.“We have detained around 250 riders including juveniles.

According to the police, pickets were put up at 52 points on the roads around India Gate.

A police official said that the drive was launched to stop bikers from breaking rules, honking and performing stunts risking their lives and that of others.

In a similar drive on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, nine bikers were challaned and four motorcycles were impounded.

A total of 288 vehicles including 36 cabs and 237 bikes were checked.

Police swung into action after around 40 rowdy bikers created ruckus on Tilak Marg, Hanuman Road and Akbar Road.  

In July last year, a 19-year-old boy was killed and his friend was wounded when police opened fire on a group of bikers performing dangerous stunts in the New Delhi district.  

The incident had caused uproar with the victim's family demanding a stern action against the policeman who had opened fire.
