    AIADMK boycotts Governor address in TN Assembly

    The principal opposition party in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK on Wednesday boycotted Governor R.N.Ravia's address to the Assembly. The AIADMK members walked out of the House soon after Ravi began his address. Speaking to reporters, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK Joint Coordinator K.Palaniswami said the party walked out protesting against the DMK government. Palaniswami charged that the law and order has worsened in the state during the last eight months since the DMK party came to power.

    Delhi Police busts fake online exam solving module; 6 held

    The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell busted a fake online exam solving module and arrested 6 people, said a police official on Wednesday. According to DCP (IFSO), KPS Malhotra, Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of 780 out of 800 were got through this syndicate. One of the arrested accused Raj Teotia is carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest and was wanted by CBI. Russian hackers were also used by the syndicate to get access to various examination portals, the police said. The raids were conducted in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurgaon and Jaipur where 15 laptops and 9 mobile phones were seized.

    COVID: Centre issues revised isolation guidelines today

    The Centre on Wednesday issued revised guidelines for home isolation of mild and asymptomatic patients amid the surge in Covid-19 cases nationwide. As per the new guidelines, the patient under home isolation will stand discharged and end isolation after at least 7 days have passed from testing positive and no fever for 3 successive days and they shall continue wearing masks. There is no need for re-testing after the home isolation period is over. Asymptomatic contacts of infected individuals need not undergo Covid test and monitor health in home quarantine as per the new guidelines. "Patient should at all times use triple layer medical mask. They should discard mask after 8 hours of use or earlier if the mask becomes wet or is visibly soiled. In the event of Caregiver entering the room, both Caregiver and patient may preferably consider using N-95 mask", said the new guidelines. The mask should be discarded after cutting them to pieces and putting in a paper bag for a minimum of 72 hours.

    West Bengal sees record Covid infections

    With each passing day, the Covid-19 situation in West Bengal is going out of control of the state administration. In the last 24 hours, 9,073 people were infected, which is nearly double the number of the people that got infected two days earlier. According to the data available with the state Health department, on Monday 6,078 people got infected with Covid-19, but on Tuesday it made a quantum leap and touched 9,073, taking the total number of Covid-infected patients to 16,64,308 in the state. The rapid increase in the spread of the disease has forced the state to go for a partial lockdown. On Monday, the infection rate in the state was 439 but on Sunday it rose to 6,153 -- a 12-time surge. On Tuesday the rate touched 9,073.

    Tamil Nadu wants GST compensation regime to be extended till 2024

    Tamil Nadu government wants the Goods and Services Tax (GST) compensation regime to be extended by two more years, Governor R.N.Ravi said. Addressing the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, Ravi said the GST compensation regime is coming to an end on June 6. "After the introduction of GST, the state was not able to realise the high growth of tax collections that it had witnessed during the VAT (value added tax) regime. The Covid pandemic has further exacerbated this problem," he said.

    4 Bihar ministers including 2 deputy CMs test COVID positive

    After doctors and medical staff, Covid infections are spreading among political leaders of Bihar. On Wednesday, four ministers including two deputy chief ministers -- Tar Kishore Prasad and Renu Devi tested positive for the coronavirus. Besides, Excise Minister Sunil Kumar and Building Construction Minister Ashok Chaudhary also tested positive. Tar Kishore Prasad was in Barh to inaugurate a government program along with JD-U national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh. The latter tested Corona positive on Tuesday and he himself said that he underwent RT-PCR test earlier and the report came on Tuesday. Similarly, Tar Kishore Prasad also underwent RT-PCR test and his report came positive on Wednesday. After the development, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar postponed Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan (Social Reforms Campaign) on Wednesday. He has also directed all cabinet ministers to undergo RT-PCR test.

    Diesel, petrol prices steady since past 2 months

    Oil marketing companies have kept the prices of diesel and petrol unchanged across the major Indian cities since November 3, 2021, when the Centre and some states reduced duties on the fuels. Accordingly, diesel and petrol prices in Delhi stood at Rs 86.67 per litre and Rs 95.41 per litre on Wednesday, respectively. In Mumbai, the rates were unchanged at Rs 94.14 and Rs 109.98. Prices also remained static in Kolkata at Rs 89.79 and Rs 104.67.  In Chennai too, they stood at Rs 91.43 and Rs 101.40.

    Youth held for posing as Hindu, abducting minor girl

    The Kasganj Police in Uttar Pradesh has arrested a youth for allegedly trapping a Hindu minor girl by posing as a Hindu boy and later forcing her to convert to Islam. According to the reports, a 15-year-old girl studying in Class 10 was kidnapped by a Muslim man in Amanpur locality of Kasganj, after which the girl's family members lodged a complaint against him at the police station. The Muslim man posed as Hindu named Raju to trick the girl and abducted her while she was on her way to the school. Later, a video appeared on social media that showed a girl in a black burqa confessing her love for 'Raju'. The minor girl in the video said that she was in a relationship with 'Raju' for the past 7 years and that they trusted each other. "He (Raju as in the video) loves me more than my parents love me. We want to get married. I have no problem getting married to him", she said.

    COVID: UP schools closed, night curfew extended

    The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh, in a late-night decision on Tuesday, has closed all schools up to Class 10 from January 6 to January 14 as the number of active Covid cases in the state crossed the 3,000-mark. With effect from Thursday, night curfew timings have also been extended by two hours. The night curfew will be now form 10 p.m. to 6 a.m, instead of the earlier 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. According to the government spokesman, any district where the number of active cases crosses 1,000, an additional set of restrictions would also be imposed. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took this decision in a late-night meeting held with Team 9-group of top officials.

    Karnataka: Semi-lockdown after unprecedented surge in Covid cases

    The Karnataka government has declared restrictions and announced new guidelines till January 19 in the wake of unprecedented surge of Covid-19 cases in the state on Tuesday. The night curfew has been extended till January 19 and weekend curfew is also being imposed as preventive measure to check the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking to reporters after marathon meeting held to discuss the prevailing situation in the state held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Minister for Health K. Sudhakar has stated that classes from 1 to 9 standards have been suspended. Pubs, bars, restaurants, theatres will operate with 50 per cent of their capacity during week days. At any given point of time, the devotees number is restricted to 50 in all religious places and prayer halls, he stated.

    J&K: Gunfight breaks out in Pulwama

    An encounter has started between terrorists and security forces at Chandgam area in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, officials said on Wednesday. "Encounter has started at Chandgam area of Pulwama. Police and security forces are on the job," a police officer said. The firefight between terrorists and security forces took place after a joint team of the police and the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about presence of terrorists. As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.
