Kashmir shivers as cold wave grips valley, mercury drops below freezing point

With the onset of winter in Kashmir, the valley has started witnessing temperatures plunging as low as freezing point. Fog covered the Srinagar city this morning, causing visibility to be restricted to a few metres.

Kashmir woke up into an early morning foggy and cold weather conditions as the minimum temperature in the valley dropped below the freezing point at several places, including the Srinagar city on Sunday night (November 19). Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded the minimum temperature of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, which was 1.2 degrees below the normal temperature for this time of the year, an official of the Indian Meteorological Department said on Monday.

The city also recorded a high of 12.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday as the maximum temperature also showed a decrease.

Shopian was the coldest place in the valley as the temperature plunged to as low as minus 3.8 degrees Celsius last night. Pahalgam was the second coldest place on the list in south Kashmir with the temperature dipping to minus 2.6 degrees Celsius.

Bandipora in north Kashmir recorded a low minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg recorded minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.

A dense fog covered the Srinagar city early in the morning, thus limiting the visibility and causing difficulty to the commuters.

The weather is expected to remain dry across the valley over the next 48 hours.
