12 amazing facts about Apple's new 'spaceship' campus

New Delhi: Back in 2011, Steve Jobs wanted to create the best office building in the world and proposed a new Apple campus to the Cupertino City Council.

Five years later comes the news that the Apple campus is expected to be ready by 2017, in signs that Jobs' wishes will finally come true. In 2009, Steve Jobs had given the project to Norman Foster, the lead architect at the firm Foster + Partners.

The campus is referred to by many as the 'Spaceship Campus' due to its flying-saucer-like design. While the main building is getting ready, we have quite a bit about what the building and the campus as a whole will look like. 

Here's a look at the 12 most impressive facts about the new campus. 

1.The entire project will cost Apple about $5 billion (Rs 33,580 crore) according to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

2.The ring-shaped building was inspired partially by London Square, where houses surround a park and by the Main Quad on Stanford University's campus.

3.The spaceship building will have 13,000 employees. The main structure has 2.8 million square feet of floor space and a circumference of nearly one mile. Also there will be about 83,000 square feet of space dedicated to meeting and breakout spaces.

4.The walls of the building will be composed of the biggest pieces of curved glass in the world. When the building will be finished more than 3,000 sheets of the curved glass will wrap around the building.

5.It will have an underground corporate auditorium that will be 120,000 square feet and will seat 1,000 people.

6.The campus will have a total of 7,000 trees and when the construction will be over, 80per cent of the site will be covered with green space.

7.It will run on 100per cent renewable energy, which will include solar energy and biofuels. Also there will be 700,000 square feet of solar panels and an on-site low carbon central plant.

8.The building enables amazing natural ventilation system, that will allow the campus to go without air conditioning or heating for 75 per cent of the year.

9.It will have jogging and cycling trails across the 176 acre campus and also have 1,000 bikes on site to help get employees around campus.

10.In total, there will be more than 10,980 parking spaces which is underground and will help keep vehicles from ruining the landscape.

11.The building will have a 100,000 square foot fitness center that will serve more than 20,000 Apple employees in the area.

12.The cafeteria covers an area of 60,000 square foot with moveable seating that can accommodate 2,100 people. There will also be 20,000 square feet of mezzanine space that can accommodate an extra 600 people and 1,750 seats on terraces outside.
