The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to increase the allowances of the priest and the staff involved in the upkeep of the makeshift Ram temple in Ayodhya.
It is the belief of Hindus that Ayodhya is Lord Ram's birthplace and the court should not go beyond to see how rational it is, said deity Ram Lalla Virajman's counsel on Wednesday before the Supreme Court which is hearing the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case for the sixth day.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Friday offered prayers at the makeshift Ram Lalla temple here, reiterating support for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site.
BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allocate land in Ayodhya for building the Ram temple and also declare the Ram Setu a national heritage monument.
This came after Sadhvi Pragya, in an exclusive interview with AajTak, said, "Why would we regret the demolition of the Babri Masjid? We are, in fact, ‘proud’ of it. There were some waste products of the Ram temple and we removed it. This has awakened the self-respect of our country and we will construct a grand Ram temple."
While BJP leaders claimed the temple land was grabbed by the District Congress Committee (DCC), a court here had ordered that the land belonged to the DCC, a local Congress leader said.
The BJP has reiterated its commitment to construct a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya in its Lok Sabha election manifesto.
Joshi said those in power are not opposed to the Ram Temple and there is no doubt over their commitment regarding this.
The top court on February 26 had said it would pass an order on March 6 on whether to refer the matter to a court-appointed mediator.
As part of the campaign, the VHP has held rallies across the country, and is meeting Parliamentarians across party lines.
This move of the government was seen as an attempt to woo the upper caste votes whose ire the BJP faced in Assembly polls of the Hindi heartland of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said there was no reason for it to doubt the Narendra Modi government's intentions on the Ram temple issue.
Fourteen appeals have been filed in the apex court against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, delivered in four civil suits, that the 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya be partitioned equally among three parties -- the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
Describing the BJP as a party with no regard for ethics, senior Congress leader Harish Rawat said a Ram temple will be built in Ayodhya only when his party comes to power at the Centre.
The government must bring an ordinance for construction of the temple, he said.
