Kabul: At least 40 police recruits were killed when a suicide bomber attacked an Afghan police convoy outside capital Kabul today afternoon.

The incident happened when a convoy carrying cadets returning from a graduation ceremony was hit by two suicide bombers.

Mousa Rahmati, the district governor of Paghman, said that trainee police officers were returning from a training center in Wardak province and were heading to the capital on leave.

"There were two explosions that targeted the police cadets vehicles on the outskirts of Kabul city," Sediq Sediqqi, Interior Ministry spokesman, said.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an email sent to media.
