New Delhi: A diplomatic spat has erupted between India and Pakistan over the unrest in Jammu and Kashmir after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani.

According to reports, New Delhi is likely to summon Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit to show proof that the 22-year-old militant was involved in multiple terror cases including killing of jawans and local representatives. This comes after Islamabad charged that Wani was killed in an ‘extra-judicial’ encounter by security forces in Kashmir last week.

On Monday, the Pakistani Foreign Office had summoned Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale to express serious concerns over the killings of Wani and many civilians in Kashmir. Soon after this, India had asked Pakistan to refrain from interfering in its internal affairs.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also issued a statement expressing "shock" at Wani's killing.

According to a report in Times of India, J&K police has sent the details of the 12 FIRs pending against Wani to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Now the MHA is in process to forward the details to the External Affairs Ministry which may then summon Basit to counter the latter’s claim.

Wani was wanted in cases related to snatching of police weapons, firing at and severely injuring, killing sarpanchs, panchs and their family members, hitting a police party and attacking a Rashtriya Rifles patrol in Tral.

Nawaz Sharif convenes special Cabinet meeting on Friday

Meanwhile, the Pakistani Premier has convened a special Cabinet meeting in Lahore on Friday to discuss the "deteriorating situation" in the violence-hit Kashmir and chalk out "future course of action" on the issue.

"The Cabinet will discuss the oppressive actions of Indian security forces against innocent civilians and the over all situation in Kashmir after the brutal assassination of Burhan Wani," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

The statement also noted that on the directions of the Prime Minister, the Foreign Office summoned Indian High Commissioner and conveyed "strong concerns of the Pakistani government and people on rapidly deteriorating human rights situation in Kashmir and increasing oppression by Indian security forces."
