Former Joint Municipal Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Nidhi Choudhari was transferred from BMC after her controversial tweet about Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse. Choudhari will now be posted in Maharashtra Mantralaya.

Choudhari started a controversy on June 1 when she tweeted that face of Mahatma Gandhi should be 'removed' from currency notes. She went on to 'thank Godse for 30.1.1948'. Gandhiji was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

The tweet has now been deleted.

There were strong reactions in Maharashtra's political circles with Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar personally requesting an action against Choudhari to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Other leaders of the NCP issued public statements against Nidhi Chaudhary as well. Jitendra Awhad, NCP's MLA from Thane region had demanded strong action against Nidhi Choudhary.

Choudhari seemed to be in damage control mode for past few days as she said that her tweet was 'misinterpreted'.

When several Twitter users asked her about her sudden devotion to Gandhian thoughts, she replied by saying that "Gandhiji inspires me daily'' and that 'My Experiments with truth' is her favourite book.

"My experiments with Truth" is an autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi.

In addition to her transfer, Maharashtra Government has issued a Show Cause notice to Choudhari.
