Bihar has done better than Modi's Gujarat on women's SHGs: Ramesh

New Delhi: Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh today attacked the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat for the dismal performance of women self help groups in the state, saying that the JD(U)-ruled Bihar had done far

He said that in the last five to six years, it was Bihar which had taken the biggest strides in the empowerment of women.

“Their (Bihar's) work for women's SHGs is admirable,” Ramesh said even as his party remains ambivalent about forging an alliance in the state with Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD.  Congress has decided to fight elections with Ramvilas Paswan's LJP.

Ramesh said that although UP government has somehow not been able to perform well in terms of women's SHGs, the association with RGMVP would give a fillip to its efforts in that direction.

According to Congress sources, RGMVP has reached out to over one million poor households in 252 blocks of 41 districts in the most backward and poverty-stricken areas of UP.  RGMVP has successfully developed a cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable poverty reduction and women's empowerment model, they claimed.
