2. Poveglia, Italy
Speculated as a haunted place due to its history of deaths of humans, it is a small island in Northern Italy near Venice.
The place has been a dumping ground of dead bodies.
This is because in 1348, Bubonic Plague spread in Venice and Povelgia.
The people of Venice who were affected by the disease were taken to Povelgia and were burnt.
The dead and the dying both were burnt even if they could survive.
Again, in 1630, the pyre was burnt when Black Death swept the island.
The island became a quarantine colony again in the 20th century.
In 1922 the existing buildings were converted into a hospital for the mentally ill.
This went on until 1968, when the hospital was closed and the island once again became uninhabited.
Legends surround the island of haunting by the victims of plague and war, as well as a crazy doctor of the mental institution who supposedly butchered and tortured patients.
Today, the island is closed to locals and tourists.
In recent years, Italian construction crews attempted to restore the former hospital building, but unexpectedly stopped without reason.
