India TV News Desk [Published on:15 Dec 2014, 8:47 PM]

It was the black night for the trainee physiotherapy student as well as for her male friend who was there with her on the bus. Both of them were returning home after watching a movie when the six men attacked them.

The attackers took their turns to rape the girl and penetrated her with a metal bar before dumping her and her friend, naked and semi-conscious, onto the road.

Her friend recovered later, but the girl's internal injuries were so severe that she died in a Singapore hospital two weeks after the attack.

The accused were Gym instructor Vinay Sharma, bus cleaner Akshay Kumar Singh, fruit-seller Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh Singh. They were sentenced to death for their part in the gang rape and killing of the 23-year-old woman in December 2012.

A fifth defendant hanged himself in his cell during the trial of the seven-month period. The sixth accused who was under 18 at the time of the attack, was sentenced to three years detention. He was given maximum punishment that's allowed under juvenile law.

This brutal rape case led to the introduction of tougher rape laws, and for the first time opened debates about gender crime on television and social media.

Following is the chronology of events that took place in the December 16, 2012 of Damini:
