Union Cabinet Minister Smriti Irani has a quirky reply to the backlash she has been receiving for her comments on the Sabrimala Temple issue.

Speaking at an event - Young Thinkers' Conference - in Mumbai, Irani said everyone has the right to pray, but not to desecrate.

"Me too issue is a big issue. I will comment on this issue and give my detailed views at a further press conference," said Rahul Gandhi during a presser in New Delhi today.

Under attack from rivals and with Assembly elections round the corner, the Centre on Thursday cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2.50 per litre, a decision that was followed by several BJP-ruled states giving an overall relief of Rs 5 per litre.

Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Irani, on Saturday said that opposition parties such as Congress were struggling for survival.

“I do politics in the area where Rahul Gandhi also does politics. In Amethi, he has lost every Assembly and local election in four years. How can a person not guaranteed to get re-elected in his own constituency have chances of returning to power in the country,” Smriti Irani told media persons in Shillong.

Smriti Irani was due to inaugurate the India Pavilion at the 71st Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The BJP has roped in its top women leaders such as Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Cabinet Minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani and others to hold townhall sessions with female voters.

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry last month issued an order for constitution of a committee to frame rules to regulate Newsportals and Media Websites.

The comments by the Information and Broadcasting Minister came in the backdrop of her ministry withdrawing its contentious press release on fake news following a directive from the Prime Minister's Office after wide-spread criticism by media and opposition parties.

In April 2017, four DU students were arrested for "chasing, misbehaving and overtaking" Smriti Irani's car in an inebriated state in the Chanakyapuri area.

Her statement comes a day after political protests, which included Congress President Rahul Gandhi taking out a march to India Gate protesting the recent rape and murder incidents.   

The order issued last evening had said that journalists could be denied government access just on the accusation of fake news and they could lose their accreditation for a limited period or permanently.
