As reported by some former members who were associated with Youth Congress at that time, Sushil had been trying to woo Naina since the very beginning. But he could only succeed when he helped Naina in resolving a land dispute which involved one of her relatives.

The two got married at Delhi's Birla Temple  in 1993. But Sushil never made his marital status public as he was afraid that it could affect his political career.
