The couple met each other in 1989 for the first time. During their first meeting Sushil was serving as the President of  Delhi state Youth Congress  and Naina Sahni was a pilot as well as the general secretary of state Youth Congress.

It is said that even before Naina met Sushil, she had developed closeness with one of her Muslim classmates. Her close friend was also a  member of Youth Congress. Naina soon had to end her relationship with her classmate due to constant pressure from her family.
