Srinagar: An Army jawan was killed in north Kashmir's Kupwara district late on Friday where the soldiers foiled an infiltration bid by militants along the Line of Control (LoC).

Defence sources said a group of heavily armed guerrillas were challenged on the LoC by alert troops when they were trying to sneak into the Indian side late last evening.

"When challenged, terrorists resorted to heavy gunfire which was returned. The infiltrators were forced to withdraw back. One soldier identified as sepoy Ramesh Yadav was martyred in the gunfire exchanges with the terrorists", Defence sources said.

In a separate encounter in south Kashmir's Pulwama district, at least 3 militants were gunned down this morning during the gunfight with security forces.

"Three local militants belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit were killed today morning (Saturday) in Panzgam village of Pulwama district,” a senior police officer said.

Troopers from Rashtriya Rifles, special operations group and Central Reserve Police Force surrounded Panzgam village and the encounter started around 3.30 am.

"When the cordon around the hiding militants was tightened, they resorted to indiscriminate firing at the surrounding security men triggering an encounter. Firing at the encounter site has stopped, but search operation was still on," the police official said.
