Mumbai: In a recent burst-out of a racket in Mumbai, two baby-selling doctors have come into limelight.

Two doctors operating from Kandivli and Dharavi area used to buy newborns from parents who wanted to ABORT their child and sold them to those who wanted to ADOPT.

The pictures of the so-called ‘Products' were exchanged on whatapp and if the buyer party was interested then the ‘commodity' was shown to them for their satisfaction and then sold off for a huge amount of money.

Not only this, but the accused even provided adopting parents with fake birth certificates of the children.

The entire racket had been running successfully under covers for more than two years and the rogues had been raking a lot of money through the same. In the last 2 years the cost of babies had been doubled by them.

Ulhasnagar police recently arrested Dr. Manlik Sharma of Joshi Nursing Home in Dharavi, Dr. Digna Sharma of Sai Clinic in Kandivli's Charkop area and her husband Ajay under Section 370 (buying or disposing of any person as slave) and 34 (Common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. Apart form them another Thane based Doctor is also under scanner.

Investigations revealed that Ajay, Dr. Digna Sharma's husband, is the ringleader who ran the entire racket with his wife and some other doctors. He used to look for couples seeking for immediate adoption and Ratna Ubale, another key operator of the racket, would provide him with new-bornes after buying them from parents who wanted to abort their child.

Knowing that legal adoption is a tedious process, parents seeking for immediate adoption used to get lured by Ajay and paid him between Rs 4-6 lakhs for a child. They were sent pictures of the infants on whatapp and after making a choice, the buyer parents even used to come to inspect ‘the product' in the Dharavi clinic where they were kept and then used to buy it.

On the other hand, there were parents in distress who wanted to abort their child. Ratna Ubale used to look for such couples in front of Government hospitals and lured them to sell off their unborn for Rs 50,000 to Rs1 lakh to them instead of aborting. The needy ones used to agree to the offer.

“We believe the network has sold many babies in this manner,” said Inspector Pandhare from Central police station.“Since the accused are not co-operating, we are seeking the help of experts to retrieve data from their cellphones, laptops and computers,” he added.
