BSF DIG M F Farooqui confirmed that a Pakistani smuggler was shot dead by the jawans and rest two were injured. The body of the dead smuggler was taken into the Pakistani territory by his abettor. The firing took place in the Border Out Post area Udhar Dhariwal of Amritsar.
According to DIG Farooqui, "there was a tip-off that smugglers from across the border may sneak in drugs from the area and a vigil was on''.
In the night at around 8:40 pm, movement was spotted by jawans of 3 Pakistani smugglers with a plastic pipe near the border. Two of them then began to proceed near the BSF fence. Later at around 9:15pm, they tried pushing a plastic pipe filled with drugs into the fence.
