According to the IMD weather bulletin, the western disturbance will result in moderate to light scattered rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh till February 21.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed respite from cold wave conditions on Wednesday following overcast skies in the valley and forecast of another spell of rain and snow later and on Thursday.
Delhi and adjoining areas of Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon witnessed heavy rains and hailstorm on Thursday evening. Traffic in Delhi-NCR was badly hit following the sudden weather change.
Commenting on the weather conditions, an official of the IMD said, "The sky will remain partly cloudy throughout the day with chances of light rain or thundershowers.”
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the hilly areas will also receive heavy snowfall in the next two days.
Delhi received 24.6 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours and the weatherman has predicted the downpour to continue throughout the day.
The weatherman has forecast generally cloudy sky with few spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle around 30 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.
Traffic in south and central Delhi has been affected the most due to flooding at several major roads and intersections.
Areas around Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Teen Murti Bhavan and RK Puram among others witnessed heavy rains and lightning in the morning.
Early morning heavy rains triggered massive traffic jams in Delhi and Gurugram on Tuesday. Several schools announced holiday due to water-logging and bad weather.
The minimum temperature settled at 28.8 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average and the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 38 degrees Celsius, the official said.
The government has alerted concerned authorities to make all preparations in view of the rising water level in Yamuna.

According to the MeT department, the maximum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 34.4 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of the year.
On Sunday, Ridge area of Delhi recorded 13.4 mm rainfall, Palam saw 7.4 mm, Ayanagar recorded 2.6 mm. Gurugram recorded 3 mm rainfall.
According to the Meteorological department, overcast and rainy conditions will continue to prevail in the region.
