The Election Commission (EC) achieved a remarkable feat by facilitating voting at the highest polling booth in Maharashtra, located at the Raireshwar Fort in the Baramati constituency, during the third phase of Lok Sabha polls on May 7. Situated atop the picturesque Raireshwar Fort, nestled at an impressive altitude of 4,491 feet, the polling booth posed logistical challenges. However, the EC orchestrated a seamless process for 160 voters, overcoming the rugged terrain and altitude obstacles.

Journey to the polling station

A team of polling staff embarked on a journey from Bhor taluka in Pune rural to the foothills of Raireshwar. From there, they trekked 18 kilometers via Rairi, followed by an hour-long trek aided by an iron ladder, to reach the polling station at the fort.

Mobilisation of resources

Equipped with essential voting machinery, including Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), control units, and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices, election staff and officers ensured that all necessary materials reached the remote polling station.

Commitment to democracy

Despite the formidable challenges posed by the treacherous terrain, the polling team demonstrated an unwavering commitment to upholding the democratic process, ensuring that every eligible voter had the opportunity to exercise their franchise.

Statewide participation

The Raireshwar polling booth falls within the Baramati constituency, comprising six assembly seats. Maharashtra, with 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest contributor to the lower house of Parliament.

National voter turnout

The third phase of polling witnessed a voter turnout of approximately 60.97 per cent across 11 states and union territories. Assam recorded the highest turnout at 75.01 per cent, while Maharashtra recorded a turnout of 53.95 per cent.

Significance of Maharashtra

With its substantial representation in the Lok Sabha, Maharashtra plays a crucial role in shaping the national political landscape. The third phase of elections encompassed several states and union territories, including Maharashtra, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and others.

Unopposed victory

Notably, the BJP secured the Surat seat unopposed, reflecting the diverse outcomes witnessed across different regions during the third phase of polling.
