The junior doctors had begun fast unto death on Saturday claiming that their demands were not met by the West Bengal government. Several senior doctors of the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata tendered their resignation today in their support.
Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case, was arrested on August 10 by the Kolkata Police. On the orders of the High Court, the CBI had took over the case from Kolkata Police.
In addition to justice for the murdered woman medic, the protesters outlined nine other demands, including the immediate removal of Health Secretary NS Nigam, accountability for alleged administrative failures, and the establishment of a centralised referral system for hospitals.

Pandey, who is said to be close to RG Kar Medical College's former principal Sandip Ghosh, was under the probe agency's scanner and was questioned by the CBI on September 30.
Depending on the submission on the part of the Bengal government in the Supreme Court hearing on Monday, junior doctors might contemplate whether to go for "total cease work or not".

The CBI said Sanjay Roy's role in the "commission of crime had already emerged" but Tala Police caused an "unnecessary delay of two days" in seizing his clothes and other belongings which could have resulted in strong evidence against him, the officials said.
On Monday, the Sealdah Court extended the custody of Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, for three more days.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is facing a big challenge to end the ongoing strike led by the junior doctors in Kolkata, last night announced that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal will be removed from his post, accepting one of the demands of protesting medics.
A delegation of 35 junior doctors arrived at Banerjee's Kalighat residence at 6:20 p.m. for the crucial talks, which began around 6:50 pm. The meeting ended around 9 pm.
In order to break the deadlock between the government and protesting doctors, CM Mamata Banerjee extended a meeting invite to RG Kar doctors. However, the doctors put forward some conditions before accepting the invitation.
Sandip Ghosh has also been booked by the ED in alleged financial irregularities linked money laundering case after taking cognisance of a CBI FIR. The ex-principal came under the scanner following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9.
