Fact Check: Old video of BJP workers tied to tree goes viral, clip has nothing to do with Rajasthan election

A video is circulating on social media ahead of the Rajasthan Assembly elections, alleging that BJP workers were tied to a tree. However, our fact-check indicates that this video is from three years ago.

India TV Fact Check: The voting for 200 assembly seats in Rajasthan is scheduled for November 25, but ahead of that, several misleading and fake pieces of information related to the electoral state are being spread on social media with malicious intent. In this context, a video has surfaced, claiming that in a village in Rajasthan, BJP workers were tied to a tree and beaten by the public, raising slogans against the BJP. However, upon fact-checking by India TV, it was revealed that the video is three years old and has no relevance to the upcoming assembly elections.

What is going viral?

A user with the handle "newsninehindi" shared this video on Instagram on November 12, 2023. It has garnered over 74,000 likes. The caption accompanying this video reads, "People tied BJP workers to trees and beat them."

Additionally, the text inside the video reads, "Workers were tied to a tree and beaten,  slogans were raised against the BJP. The video is said to be from a village in Rajasthan."  In this video, it is seen that some people are tied to a tree by a mob, and alongside, a person is seen setting fire to the flag of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Meanwhile, people standing nearby are raising slogans against the BJP. The viral video from Rajasthan during the election season gives the impression that it depicts a recent incident.

We started searching for information related to this news on Google using keyword search. In the search results, we found a news article on the Navbharat Times website. The headline of the article was, "Angry at not getting tickets, BJP workers tied officials to a tree." This news was published on November 10, 2020. According to this NBT report, the anger of workers due to not getting tickets has come to the fore in the Panchayat Raj elections in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan. The workers vented their anger on the BJP's Bhairund Mandal president and his fellow officials. Due to the workers' dissatisfaction with not getting tickets, they tied officials to a tree. During this incident, the anger of the workers was so intense that they even burned the BJP flag and continued sloganeering against the party.

Not only that but in this news, a three-year-old video of BJP workers being tied to a tree was also found. In this news as well, angry workers tied some people to a tree and set fire to the BJP flag. Additionally, people in the video were chanting slogans against the BJP. The video shows the party officials tied to the tree were crying.

Upon further searching about this news, we found a related story on the Patrika website as well. The headline was, "BJP Officials Tied to Tree, Party Flag Burned." This news was published on November 9, 2020. From this news, it is clear that the video is from November 2020 during the Panchayat Samiti elections in Nagaur, Rajasthan, when BJP workers tied party officials to a tree due to dissatisfaction with ticket distribution.

What was found in fact check

India TV's fact-check revealed that the viral video is from the Panchayat Samiti elections in Rajasthan in 2020 and has no connection with the recent legislative assembly elections.
