Movie review: Kai Po Che, a masterpiece by Abhishek Kapoor

New Delhi, Feb 22: First thing first, Kai Po Che is the Gujrati line meaning ‘I Have Cut' which comes out in a kite flying festival when one knocks down the opponent's kite.In real sense Abhishek Kapoor's ‘Kai Po Che' cuts one of the remarkable depictions of three brothers for life friends and implants in our heart for ever.Adopted form Chetan Bhagat's novel ‘3 Mistakes of my life' KPC is not about the friends of school or college campus.Its' not that what we have seen in so many dramas which include flirting, dancing and mimic around during college hours but its about three adult pals and their struggle in life whose friendship is tested on a big scale.Though it has the shade of Dil CHahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, but Abhishek Kapoor's KPC unlike the three and his ‘Rock On'.Set against the backdrop of Ahmedabad, KPC is about three friends Omi (Amit Sadh) , Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) and Gobind (Raj Kumar Yadav) who are a middle class big dreamers but are honest in their attempt.Govind is mathematics freak and gives tuitions for earning and does small little things to earn for survival. Ishaan is cricket freak who failed to make it to Indian cricket team and is always let down by his father in public for his notorious acts.Omi among the three is better in financial terms. He is the son of a priest in a temple and has an uncle involved in politics. Govind is the smarter one to think about a business and ropes in the two who are idle.They kick off with a sports shop and cricket academy occupying a play ground with the help of Omi's political uncle. They dream to turn it into a big shop in a big mall because that's the future. But everything goes wacky when natural calamity hits their dreams and later the Godhra riot takes place. Will their friendship be able to survive or lose its breath? That is what Abhishek Kapoor's masterpiece in all about.KPC is a well- acted kept it simple and elegant in every aspect. It's Kapoor's brilliance and vision which delivers the same magic on the big screen as is texted in Chetan Bhagat's novel. At the flaws side there aren't many except his ditheration on tackling the issue of Ghodra Riot. But that could be ignored.The Director covers the merry making after a win in cricket. In one scene where India beats Australia and Ishaan runs with the flag in his gully and is joined by Omi who was annoyed with him for a minor quarrel. A simple instance how cricket resolves issues.Cricket is a religion and the celebration made out of the win excites you more when you see on the big screen.Abhishek Kapoor invests their story of struggle, despair and hope with the undeniable and successful power of humanism. The tone of sustained optimism in the middle of the dark shadows might however seem a bit too false.But above all its sheer chacterisation which is admirable. The debutant actor Sushant Singh Rajput venturing from small to big screen is full of talent and is natural. He brings alive Ishaan's short-tempered character, is energetic and passion towards young Adi to make him a big cricketer, after observing him a born cricketer, is even more admiring.Omi is another young talent to be looked forward. He is enveloped into his uncle political party and shows lot of intensity. Especially in the final few minutes his act adores.But who wins heart with his performance is Raj Kumar Yadav who portrays a total baniya character. He is very well crafted in his character as he keeps the count of each penny earned. He shies well giving tuition to girl while tackles intelligently with political leader. We have seen his acts in Love Sex Aur dhoka, Gangs of Wasseypur and Talaash but this will totally belong to his finesse.Amrita Puri, the only lead actress, playing Ishaan's sister also has an out and out love story with Ishaan's friend Gobind. It seems cute especially in the Garba dance festival.Background score by Hitesh Sonik delivers here its best, while Amit Trivedi is turning out to be the jinn of musical talent. Though there are only three tracks but all are brilliant especially Rishto Ka Manjha and Shubharambh.I'll go with 3.5 stars for Abhishek Kapoor's brilliant adaptation. It's an epic over true relationship. The Director has actually struck down all other director's kites and is flying his own proudly. KPC surely would be hailed at numerous award ceremonies like already it's been loved in Berlin Film festival.
