7. Mumbai Gang Rape

Another rape case in the list is the 2013 Mumbai Gang Rape, popularly known as the Shakti Mills gang rape where a 22 year old photo journalist was gang-raped by five people.

The victim, who was working as an intern with an English-language magazine in Mumbai, went to the secluded area of Shakti Mills with a male colleague for an assignment on August, 2013.

During her assignment, she came across five men, out of which one was a juvenile. The accused tied the victim's colleague with his belts, and raped the girl. The accused also forced the victim's colleague to join the rape, but his resistance the thrashed him as well.

The culprits took the photographs of the victim and threatened to release them publicly if she complained about the rape.

This case caused a lot of outcry from the public and media and the court awarded the death penalty to the three of the accused, on 4th April, 2014, who were the repeated offenders and also raped the telephone operator at the same place, while the other two convicts were awarded life imprisonment.
