Rajkot, Oct 4 : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said voters should quiz Congress candidates for the upcoming civic polls in the state, about their relationship with Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster killed in a fake encounter by Gujarat police.

"I ask the voters that when Congress candidates come to you to seek votes, you should ask them what relationship they have with Sohrabuddin Sheikh," Modi said addressing a rally here tonight. "I don't understand why Congress is working so hard to rake up the issue of Sohrabuddin Sheikh," he added.

Modi's close aide and former minister of state for home Amit Shah was arrested by CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and is in jail.

Modi said it was unfortunate that despite there being a misappropriation of Rs 70,000 crore in the organisation of the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not willing to probe the issue.

He further alleged that Congress-led UPA government at the Centre could not digest the progress made by Gujarat and hence was creating hurdles to spoil the State's progress.

"The Central government is torturing Gujarat by not sanctioning various developmental projects and also trying to take credit of those projects which were launched and completed by the state government," Modi said.

"The Union Government is treating Gujarat like a beggar", Modi said adding that though the state had given Rs 50,000- crore as tax to the Central government it had received only some per cent of it in return. Criticising the Union government's policy on cotton export, he said, "The government is giving subsidy for export of meat but slapping tax on cotton export."

Modi has been extensively campaigning for the elections in six municipal corporations of the state -- Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Junagadh -- slated to be held on October 10. PTI
