BSNL, the public sector telecom company, is set to launch its 'Made in India' 4G service in August this year. As per company sources, the 4G service has been recently tested claiming to offer internet data access at a maximum speed of 40 to 45 mbps. The testing was done on 700 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrum bands. Furthermore, BSNL has collaborated with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Telecom Research Organization C-Dot to launch 4G service built on indigenous technology in Punjab. The pilot project of BSNL has already added 8 lakh new users to its 4G network.

A senior BSNL official said, "The 4G core built by C-DOT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was established in July last year, and it takes 12 months to prove the success of such a complex technology. However, C-DOT's core has been stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will offer self-reliant 4G technology across the country in August."

BSNL has ordered 4G network deployment worth around Rs 19,000 crore from TCS, Tejas Networks, and government-owned ITI. The network can be converted to 5G later. Tejas Network Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer Arnab Roy said that the BSNL's mobile network is being deployed in various areas. Wherever C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is being integrated into the existing core.

BSNL is in the process of installing 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and 5G services across India. The company has already installed more than 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, with more than 6,000 towers in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana circles. Only customers who have an old SIM will have to get a new one to experience 4G service since BSNL has been selling only 4G-enabled SIMs for the last four-five years.
