Karnataka assembly elections: Signalling the end of his electoral politics, Yediyurappa last Friday said he will be vacating his Shikaripura assembly seat in Shivamogga.
The electorate for this election comprises elected members of urban and rural local bodies, and unlike legislative assembly or Lok Sabha polls, council contests are decided by preferential votes.
The development has come in the backdrop of state BJP strong man and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa openly seeking JD(S) support in the seats where the regional party is not contesting.
Karnataka state election commission on Wednesday said it has announced results for 54,041 seats of 5,728 Gram Panchayats, while that of the remaining 36,781 seats will be announced on Thursday.
A total of 3,019 panchayats in 117 taluks across Karnataka will go for polling in the first phase of Gram Panchayat elections today. A total of 1.17 lakh candidates are in the fray for 43,238 seats. Voting will be held between 7am to 5pm.
The Karnataka state Election Commission on Monday announced dates for the elections to the Gram Panchayats in two-phases on December 22 and December 27.
Commenting on the development, the former prime minister also said he had suggested Mallikarjun Kharge's name for the post of the chief minister.
In the civic body polls held on August 31, the Congress has won 982 seats out of the total 2,662 seats, with a majority in 10 districts including Ballari, Bidar, Gadag, Mysuru, Uttara Kannada and Raichur, the SEC said in its website.
Inayatullah Khan, who won the election from ward No. 16 in Tumakuru -- around 70 km from Bengaluru, was taking out the procession in the morning when an unidentified person sprayed some liquid on the crowd and fled the scene, police said.
