Patidar leader and former Congressman Hardik Patel has been given ticket from the Viramgam seat that the BJP lost in the last two assembly polls. Hardik Patel was born on 20 July 1993 and he worked in Gujarat as a social activist. He rose to prominence in July 2015, where he led the Patidar reservation agitation that sought Other Backward Class (OBC) status for the Patidar caste. He joined the Congress party in 2020. Patel served as the Working President of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, the state unit of INC in Gujarat. He left INC in May 2022. Flipping from being a strident critic, he eventually joined the Bharatiya Janata party in June 2022.

Hardik Patel, 24, supported the Congress in the polls. In his rallies, however, he did not openly back the party but urged the people not to vote for the BJP.
"The BJP has already accepted defeat -- that is why half of the government is out working in the elections," Patel claimed.
Dinesh Bambhania claimed that the money was given by NCP leader Praful Patel but no one was informed about this. He demanded Hardik Patel to explain what he had done with the money.
Hardik's Monday rally set the social media on fire with as many as 52,800 Facebook Live views, compared to 27,000 views earlier in the week that even got him an invite by Facebook CEO from US.
Police have also denied permission to the Congress and the ruling BJP to hold roadshows in the city tomorrow, citing traffic congestion and law and order situation as reasons.
Despite anger and displeasure with the BJP, there are many Patidars who vow to vote for the saffron party to keep the Congress out of power, as they feel they would be insecure if the BJP loses.
Bambhania said he could not understand why Patel was supporting the Congress party, despite it not clarifying how it would give reservation to the Patidar community if voted to power.

Speaking at a public rally at Tragad village near Dholka town, an hour's drive from Ahmedabad, Hardik Patel said that he "did not seek a single ticket from any party."
