Chawla, during his confession, told that he was a regular customer of the victim. In 2003, after he fell in love with her, he asked her to quit prostitution and settle down with him. The victim refused citing her debts as the reason. Chawla alleged that in order to repay her debts, he sold off his house and shop. He also took loans from some financers and handed over all the money to the victim.
