Next month, on May 31, Manoj and Babli filed a plea in Haryana High Court that their lives were in danger.

Age proofs were also submitted and both testified in the court that they married on their own will.

According to the age proofs presented in the court, Babli was shown to be 19 and Manoj was 23.

In response to the FIR filed by Babli's family, she testified in front of Rajaund police in Kaithal and Sessions judge that the marriage had taken place with her consent.

The police was criticized by the sessions judge for suggesting to send Babli to Nari Niketan. An order was passed and the couple was allowed to move freely. Also, police security was provided to Manoj and Babli.

On 20th June, an FIR was lodged by Butana police after Manoj's mother Chandrapati had lodged a complaint in which she informed police about the phone call she received from her daughter-in-law Babli from Pipli while they en route Chandigarh.

A scared Babli told Chandrapati that her family was following the couple and they were soon going to leave for Chandhigarh. She also added that the police security was no longer with them.

Babli told over phone that they were made to de-board the bus by police after Babli saw two of her relatives in the bus. Nobody ever heard from the couple once Babli hung up that call.

Terrified about the well-being of their son and daughter-in-law, Manoj's family lodged a complaint but unfortunately they did not receive the help they were entitled to.

Both Karnal and Kaithal police did not show much support in the investigations. Left with no other option, a relative of the family visited Pipli and enquired about the couple at various police stations.

Finding a clue in a kidnapping FIR filed by a contractor, the relative reached the person and on presenting the photograph of the couple in front of him, he came to know about the gruesome reality.

The contractor told  them that the couple was made to de-board the bus at Raipur Jatan and were beaten and taken away in a Scorpio. This information was given to police but nothing could be traced out.

The nightmare of the family came true on June 23 when two mutilated bodies were found from Barwala branch canal in Hissar.

Later investigations revealed that the couple was asked to accept each other as brother and sister.

On their denial, the couple was forcefully fed with pesticide. Manoj, who resisted drinking the poisonous substance, was strangled to death. The bodies were then thrown in the canal.

With almost no cooperation from the police, Manoj's family decided to find the culprits on their own.

No one from Babli's family came to claim or identify the body. Even her ashes were collected by Jagmati Sangwan, state president of the All India Democratic Women's Association and handed over to Manoj's family.
