Vastu rules you should know before decorating your room
Planning to decorate your room? From bed placement and mirror direction to wall colours, clutter and electronics, these simple Vastu rules can help you create a calm, balanced and positive-looking space while keeping traditional beliefs in mind.
Choose the right direction for your bed: According to Vastu principles, the direction in which you sleep is considered important. The head of the bed is generally recommended towards the south, while east is also considered favourable. Avoid placing the head towards the north, as traditional Vastu considers this unsuitable for sleeping.

Keep the centre of the room clutter-free: A room that is packed with furniture can feel heavy and cramped. Vastu recommends keeping the central area of a room relatively open. Avoid unnecessarily filling this space with bulky furniture, storage boxes or piles of belongings.

Be mindful of mirror placement: Mirrors are an important part of room decor, but their placement is given particular importance in Vastu. Avoid placing a mirror directly opposite your bed, especially if it reflects you while you are sleeping. Instead, position it where it does not directly face the bed.

Pick calming colours: Colours can dramatically change the feel of a room. For bedrooms, soft and soothing shades such as light pink, cream, beige, pastel green or light blue are traditionally considered preferable. Very dark or excessively bright colours may make the space feel visually overwhelming.

Place electronics thoughtfully: Televisions, computers and other electronic devices are best kept away from the immediate sleeping area wherever possible. Apart from Vastu considerations, limiting screens around bedtime can also help create a more restful environment.

Avoid storing clutter under the bed: The space beneath the bed should ideally remain clean and uncluttered. Avoid turning it into a storage area for old clothes, paperwork, shoes or unused objects. Keeping the area clear can also make regular cleaning easier.

Use decor that feels positive: Vastu-friendly decorating is not necessarily about filling a room with specific objects. Choose artwork, photographs and decorative pieces that evoke calmness and happiness. Avoid displaying imagery that makes the room feel gloomy, aggressive or unsettling.

Keep the room clean and well-ventilated: A well-maintained room can instantly feel lighter and more comfortable. Keep windows unobstructed where possible, allow natural light and fresh air into the space, and regularly remove broken or unused objects.
