“Ranjit Das, 28, an auto driver was arrested on Monday night for raping a deaf and dumb girl who won several medals at national level athletics. Medical tests conducted on the victim shows the offence was committed, and the accused was remanded to police custody on Tuesday,” an investigating officer said.
According to the police, on Sunday, the victim was returning to her home at Hemtabad from Raigunj, the district town of North Dinajpur, in Das's auto.
When Das realised that the girl is deaf and dumb, he dropped other passengers and took the athlete to his house and raped her.
On Monday morning, the athlete went back to her home at Hemtabad and wrote down the entire story at the local police station, police said.
“Following the complaint, we immediately raided Das's house, but he was absconding. We traced him at his relative's house and he was arrested on Monday night. Das was produced at the court on Tuesday morning and he was given 14 days police custody,” the officer said.
“The victim is national level medal winner. I have met the police officers who said the medical test confirms she was raped. The administration must ensure that the offender is given exemplary punishment so that such a heinous crime is not repeated,” said Kanti Ganguly, a former minister and the head of Paschim Banga Pratibandhi Sammilani (a pro disabled person organisation).
