The Supreme Court Wednesday dismissed Congress MP Karti Chidambaram's plea seeking return of Rs 10 crore which he had deposited with the court's registry as a condition for being allowed to travel abroad.
The Supreme Court Tuesday permitted Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, to travel abroad in May and June after depositing Rs 10 crore as security with it.
The development comes after a special court here last month extended the interim protection from arrest for the father and son till May 6 in the Aircel-Maxis deal case.
Earlier on February 7, Karti Chidambaram was questioned for about six hours by the ED in connection with a money-laundering probe against him in the INX Media case.
It is understood that Karti was confronted with certain statements of the other accused and witnesses in the case. Officials said he might be called again for questioning.
Karti was arrested on February 28, 2018 by the CBI for allegedly accepting money to facilitate the FIPB clearance to INX Media. He was later granted bail.
The Enforcement Directorate will question Karti Chidambaram in INX Media money laundering case today. Karti has been questioned on several occasions in the case being probed by the ED as well as the Central Bureau of Investigation
Karti has now been asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on March 5, 6, 7 and 12 for questioning in connection with the INX Media and Aircel Maxis cases, saying "don't play around with the law".
On September 18 last year it had allowed Karti to travel to the UK from September 20-30. Karti is facing criminal cases which are being investigated by the ED and the CBI.
The CBI had on November 26 told the court that Centre had granted sanction to prosecute P Chidambaram. The case relates to alleged irregularities in grant of FIPB approval in Aircel-Maxis deal.
The submissions have been made by the father-son duo in their rejoinder filed in response to the replies of the probe agencies.
According to the I-T Department, Chidambaram, wife Nalini, son Karti failed to disclose a property they jointly own in Cambridge in the UK, worth Rs 5.37 crore.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said the issue of Karti Chidambaram visiting abroad is not an “important matter” requiring urgent hearing.
Appearing for the CBI and ED, Additional Solicitor General Tusshar Mehta told CBI Special Judge O P Saini that Chidambaram was not cooperating with the agencies.
Reacting to the order, Karti tweeted, "A bizarre and outlandish provisional attachment order which is not based on law of facts but on crazy conjectures. This is meant only to grab headlines".

Special CBI Judge O P Saini put up the matter for November 1 after the counsel appearing for agencies sought an adjournment in the matter.
The court pulled up the agency for filing the charge sheet without proper sanction and told the CBI that if required documents are not filed by November 26, the next day of hearing, the court may take appropriate action.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud fixed for Tuesday the plea of Karti seeking its nod to travel to the United Kingdom.
