Angelo Mathews took sweet revenge on Shakib Al Hasan after the latter's appeal resulted in the former being adjudged timed out in the 38th match of the ongoing World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday, November 6.

Mathews denied Shakib the opportunity to score his 10th ODI ton and third in the ODI World Cup history as he got rid of the southpaw in the 32nd over of Bangladesh's run chase.

Mathews dismissed Shakib on the first ball of the 32nd over. The former Sri Lanka skipper bowled an off-cutter that pitched on the good length and deceived Shakib as the latter miscued an attempted flick and made the error of closing the face of his bat too early.

The ball popped up in the air and was grabbed by a diving Charith Asalanka who made no mistake. Mathews pointed towards his wrist where one usually wears a wristwatch to give a send-off to the Bangladesh captain as if to suggest 'it's time to leave'.

Earlier in the day,  Mathews had to walk back to the pavilion after being adjudged timed out by the on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Marais Erasmus as Shakib appealed and didn't withdraw the same despite having deliberations with his teammates and Mathews.

Mathews was late in facing his first delivery after a helmet malfunction as the strap got damaged as soon as he was preparing to face the Bangladesh captain during the 25th over of Sri Lanka's innings.

The veteran Sri Lankan allrounder was visibly miffed at Shakib's decision to not withdraw the appeal and threw the helmet away in anger as soon as he crossed the boundary skirting on his way to the dressing room. Mathews was also seen having a chat with his skipper Kusal Mendis while heading to the dressing room.
