Various amendments moved by opposition members, including Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM) and Revolutionary Socialist Party member NK Premachandran, were rejected in divisions.
Under the proposed law, instant triple talaq in any form -- spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp -- would be illegal and void.
Sources in the government earlier said Prasad was in touch with leaders of the TMC, the BJD and some other parties to seek their help for the passage of the bill.
Naqvi's remarks against the Congress came as the BJP-led central government today introduced a legislation in the Lok Sabha to make instant triple talaq illegal and void. The bill also seeks to award a three-year jail term to the husband.
The bill was -- Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, was introduced by Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
In the midst of all these developments, the verdicts cherished most by citizens and that hogged the international glare was that of Triple Talaq.
