On Tuesday in Bareilly, UP, a Muslim woman Razia died of starvation. She was given triple talaq by her husband over phone.
On July 8, around 35 Muslim women of Bareilly had held a press conference in which they had demanded tough laws against practices like triple talaq, halala and polygamy.
Razia, the victim, belonged to Bareilly and was given “Triple Talaq” over phone by her husband.
She also alleged that her husband inflicted burn injuries on her with cigarettes days before 'divorcing' her by giving triple talaq, the police said.
The government believes that nikah halala, which allows a man to remarry his divorced wife, is against the principles of gender justice. We had made our stand clear in the top court on the issue, the functionary said.
Khurshid, who has written a book "Triple Talaq: Examining Faith", said a bill on the subject that is pending in parliament "does not make sense" as the practice has been outlawed by the Supreme Court.
Sharad Pawar said if banning instant triple talaq was about giving protection to women, then "whatever one intends to do should be done by taking prominent people in the Muslim community and clerics into confidence".
The development comes at a time when the government is making a strong pitch for the passage of bill that criminalises triple talaq.
Delivering his maiden address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament, Kovind also made it clear that the Narendra Modi government will do everything to empower the minorities.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Modi said that despite his government's efforts and people's expectations, the Triple Talaq Bill could not be passed in the last session.
As per police, the Hyderabad MP was not hurt in the incident and the accused has been identified but has not been arrested yet.
The triple talaq bill is a conspiracy against Muslims and a move to punish men from the community, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has alleged.
Asked about a possibility of bringing in an ordinance till the bill cleared, Ananth Kumar parried a direct reply and said: "The dates for the budget session have already been announced."
The winter session, which started on December 15 and concluded today on January 5, had 13 sittings spread over a period of 22 days. Both the Houses were adjourned sine die today.
The BJP leader's remarks came as the deadlock over the bill in the Rajya Sabha continued with the government rejecting the opposition's insistence on sending the bill to the Select Committee for detailed scrutiny.
The bill, which has divided political parties and drawn criticism from several Muslim bodies, was passed by the Lok Sabha on December 28. It now has to be passed by the Rajya Sabha to become a law.
