A 33-year-old woman has alleged that she has been sexually exploited by Binoy Kodiyeri. The CPI-M leader's son though has denied the crime terming it a case of blackmail.
On Thursday, the Kannur unit of the Congress launched a day-long protest.
An editorial in the CPI-M journal "People's Democracy" said: "In many industrial centres around the country, the working class has voted for the BJP. In areas where the Left wielded influence amongst workers, there has been a reduction of that influence with some exceptions like Tamil Nadu and Kerala."
Of the 36 political parties, whose representatives were elected to the 17th Lok Sabha, 15 got fewer votes than NOTA. Many of these parties contested only a handful of seats.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) is likely to lose its national party status following the debacle in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections in which the party won just two seats.
Noting the "severe setback in these elections", the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has decided to introspect and draw lessons from it.
CPI's national secretary Atul Kumar Anjaan criticised Rahul Gandhi's decision, which he believes led to the downfall of opposition.
In the letter, the party's politburo member Nilotpal Basu urged the poll panel to "strongly initiate" appropriate action to stop the pre-election atmosphere from being vitiated, which is fast degenerating towards polarisation.
"Their only target is to consolidate the Hindutva communal vote bank. But this time that is not going to happen," he claimed.
Gandhi, who filed his nomination last week, has, however, said he would not speak against the Left during his campaign though he understood CPI(M) has to attack him.
Apart from senior CPI leader Atul Kumar Anjan who will fight in Ghosi Lok Sabha seat, the party has fielded candidates in Robertsganj, Khiri, Banda, Bareilly, Ballia, Shahjahanpur, Lalganj and Gorakhpur.
The development comes a day after the Congress announced candidates for 11 constituencies which includes the two which the CPI(M) had won in 2014.
West Bengal becomes a new addition to the list of states where the Congress failed to clinch a seat-sharing deal to take on the BJP.
The CPI has also agreed to include BLF partners in the alliance for the Lok Sabha polls due by May, CPI(M) State Secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram said.
The party has decided to seek the support of 'Prajakutami' partners in the Lok Sabha elections 2019 due by May.
The incident at the ancestral house of BJP Rajya Sabha member V Muraleedharan occurred in the early hours of Saturday. No one was injured, police said.
