Scientists have discovered the first known permanent immigrant to the solar system – an asteroid, currently nestling in Jupiter’s orbit, that migrated from another star system.
NASA estimated that the asteroid measures 48 to 110 meters wide — 3.6 times the size of the one that levelled 2,000 square kilometers of Siberian forest when it exploded over Tunguska in 1908.
Though chances are there that a lot of living things on the planet might be destroyed due to this but forward-thinking astrophysicists have a plan to deal with this.
NASA scientists have been tracking this asteroid for over 14 years and know its orbit very accurately.
Following yesterday's pass, the asteroid's next 'close-approaches' to Earth will take place in 2019, 2050 and 2079.
The asteroid, which is estimated to be 15 to 30 metres in size, will pass just above the orbital altitude of communications satellites.
Understanding its origin and evolution may provide new insights into the early days of the solar system, NASA said
NASA says Asteroid Florence, a large near-Earth asteroid, will pass by Earth on at 5.35 PM IST Friday and will be visible through telescopes for several nights
Florence will be the largest Near-Earth Object (NEO) to whiz past the planet since NASA began tracking them some 20 years ago
A large near-Earth asteroid will make a flight very close to earth safely on April 19th this year, US space agency NASA has said. The asteroid was discovered nearly three years ago.
A team of astronomers led by an Indian-origin researcher have spotted the smallest asteroid ever characterised – a tiny space rock measuring two metres in diameter. The asteroid, named 2015 TC25, is also one
The asteroid which killed the age of dinosaurs about 65 million years ago may have nearly punctured the Earth's crust, and temporarily caused the surface of the planet to behave like a slow-moving fluid, a
NASA will launch the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft to a near-Earth asteroid Bennu on Thursday to bring a small sample back for study. Bolted to the top of a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket,
The US space agency NASA is all set to launch its first mission to return a sample of an asteroid to Earth, which will help study how planets formed and how life began. The Origins,
NASA scientists are all set to bring samples from the asteroid bennu and for this they are launching a spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx on September 8. As per reports, scientists at NASA are working along
An asteroid that will pass by the earth, as it does every six years, has scientists deeply worried. So much so, that NASA has said that they are sending a probe team to the asteroid's
