Foeticide of Kejriwal's political baby

Raj Singh

Arvind Kejriwal is shocked and shattered as Anna has forbidden him from using his name or photograph in his planned political campaigns. But why is Kejriwal shocked? Everybody knows Anna is not a political animal and he abhors any kind of political association. Even when Kejriwal and his supporters announced their decision to go political, Anna looked reluctant and was skeptical of success of this endeavor, albeit covertly.

Publicly, Anna extended his full support to Kejriwal’s new initiative at that time but his body language clearly manifested his disappointment and disapproval to the very idea of movement’s metamorphosis into a political entity. It was Anna’a appreciation for Arvind’s commitment to the fight against corruption and his many sacrifices that stopped Anna from immediately pouring cold water on Arvind’s newly found enthusiasm for making the movement political.

Now the question is – will Kejriwal be able to make a mark for his yet to be formed political entity with Anna Hazare missing from the dais? Worse, Anna has warned him not  to use his name or photograph!

The answer is simple and will shock Arvind once again – it’s a big NO. It was the credibility and charisma of Anna Hazare which first generated the momentum and later sustained it for so long. Arvind has seen public response to his individual protests on streets of New Delhi, the heart of Anna’a support base.

Frankly speaking, Anna Hazare’s dissociation from Arvind Kejriwal at this stage has effectively resulted in foeticide of Kejriwal’s so passionately conceived political baby. To the credit of Arvind, even he pleaded with Anna for not breaking away saying his team was nothing without Anna and that everything will come to a naught in his absence.

But those who have followed this movement closely know it very well that the entire movement has been a brainchild of Arvind Kejriwal from the beginning. Anna joined it later on and it was Kejriwal who convinced Anna to lend support to his movement.

No body can take credit away from Arvind so far as taking this movement to common masses is concerned.

There can be no two views over the necessity to go political if Kejriwal and his acolytes want the parliament to adopt their version of Lokpal bill because in a parliamentary democracy, this is the only way out for ushering in radical changes in the political system. Framing laws is the prerogative that the constitution has delegated to the elected representatives and this should not be tinkered with in any form.

Arvind can still try to achieve his objective through parliamentary route and political means but the road ahead is difficult and will test his patience for too long to sustain. Is Arvind ready for a long battle and even longer wait for his dream to come true? And from where will he find an alternative face in place of Anna because Anna’s are not made in a day, month or year. It takes a few eras for an Anna to make his presence felt on the social and political horizon.

Future is always pregnant with possibilities but for time being, it’s all over for Arvind's yet to be born political baby!
