In the joint operation carried out by Meerut and Noida police, Rathin Basu, president and MD of power giant Alstom India was rescued on Saturday morning in Meerut after an exchange of fire with the kidnappers.
Police said, Rathin Basu and his driver Ram Babu had left Alstom headquarters in Sec 65 Noida on Friday at around 7:45 pm, when a Wagon R car hit their Toyota Camry vehicle barely one and a half km away from sector 66.
Three armed kidnappers forced their way into Basu's car and drive him off towards Meerut, blindfolding him on the way. Basu was however allowed to call his family on phone.
When Noida police was informed about the abduction on Friday night, they put Basu's phone on surveillance and zeroed in on Civil Lines, Meerut.
Around Friday midnight, the entire area was cordoned off and a house-to-house search began. Early in the morning, a police patrol informed about some suspicious characters trying to leave a house, and then the police moved in.
A brief exchange of fire followed, both Basu and his driver were rescued, and three of the kidnappers were arrested. The three others managed to escape.
