Notably, an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Nepal's Jajarkot district in November last year, killing more than 150 people and injuring nearly 400. India was the first country to dispatch emergency relief materials to the earthquake-hit districts in Nepal.
The consignment comprising nine tonnes of emergency relief materials from India arrived in Nepalgunj on Monday after PM Modi promised to extend assistance to the earthquake-prone country. Meanwhile, another earthquake of 5.6 magnitude struck Nepal on the same day.
Nearly two days after a powerful earthquake in Nepal killed more than 150 people, the hilly state again recorded massive tremors on Monday at around 4:16 pm.
Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava on behalf of the Government of India handed over the relief materials to Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister & Defence Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka in the presence of Chief Minister of Karnali Raj Kumar Sharma.
Nepal, a hilly state, is located at the boundary of two plates and therefore lies in a highly active seismic region. Therefore, earthquakes are common in Nepal. Since January 1, 2023, till date, there have been a total of 70 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and above in Nepal.
A strong earthquake shook northwestern Nepal districts just before midnight on Friday, following which at least 128 people died and several others were injured, officials said. Officials further added that the toll was expected to rise as rescue operations were on.
