Maoists are planning to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an attack similar to the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, intercepts of internal communication of the rebels have revealed.
The plot to assassinate PM Modi was revealed when the Pune Police raided the house of one of the accused in Bhima Koregaon violence case.
The probe comes in the backdrop of allegations that security forces killed "innocent villagers" by poisoning their meals.
The incident comes days after 39 Maoists were gunned down by security forces in Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra.
As many as 21 women and 18 men Maoists were gunned down in the twin-operations on Sunday morning and Monday evening in Gadchiroli, considered the worst Maoist-affected district in the country.
Those killed include several dreaded Maoist commanders and female Dalam commanders. At last, good news have started coming in about Maoists being eliminated in operations by security forces.
At least 11 more bodies of suspected Maoists were recovered from the Indravati River by the security forces on Tuesday, official sources said. As per reports, the death toll in the last 48 hours has reached 33.
The bodies, which were bloated and have started to decompose, were found floating on the banks of river which flows along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh borders.
