In a recent deepfake incident, India TV's Editor-in-Chief, Rajat Sharma, became a victim of a manipulated video endorsing a weight loss drug. The deepfake falsely claimed Sharma's endorsement and featured a fabricated endorsement from Dr. Naresh Trehan, CEO of Medanta Group.
Soon after Rashmika's video went viral on social media, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had issued an advisory to social media platforms, highlighting the legal regulations governing deepfakes and the potential consequences associated with their creation and dissemination.
Researchers conducted searches on Google and Bing for 36 renowned female celebrities, utilizing a combination of their names and the term "deepfakes." Upon examination, it was found that, for 34 queries on Google and 35 on Bing, the top search results included links to deepfake videos.
Fact-checking by India TV confirmed the video's falsehood, with visuals traced back to an April 2023 interview. Tendulkar's call to report such instances underlines the challenge of combating misinformation and deepfakes, stressing the need for swift action from social media platforms.
The latest advisory is the culmination of discussions held by Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar with intermediaries. It emphasises that digital intermediaries must ensure users are informed about penal provisions, including those in the IPC and the IT Act 2000.
